Why Peniel Discipleship?
Gordon Whitlock once said, “A boy [girl] is the only thing we have to work with to make a man [woman].” For decades, the mission of Camp Peniel has been to bring campers, young or old, to meet God Face to Face through His Son, Jesus Christ, and through the power and the work of the Holy Spirit.
We believe one of the ways we can take part in seeing the dark places in our world made bright is by training, equipping and commissioning young adults to be like Jesus to the nations, to co-workers, to family members, to campers and whoever or wherever else the Lord may direct them.
In the book of Matthew, chapter 28, Christ calls his disciples to go to the world with a mission. That mission was not only that the Gospel would be heard, but that disciples would be made. Peniel is obedient to that call of Christ by providing, time, space and challenges which present opportunities for students be fruitful and effective in the world they have been placed.
The Peniel Discipleship Program is for young adults entering or exiting their college years (18-25 years old) and desiring to spend time learning more of the heart & character of God, discovering their gifts and talents, and exploring how to use those gifts and talents given by the Holy Spirit to fulfill the mission given by Christ.
More than goals or achievements, we want to see dreams and passions birthed and directed towards God’s glory. Whether that is on adventures in missions across the world or within the small community of Marble Falls, Texas, Peniel Discipleship wants to provide an atmosphere for growth in being a disciple, not only in belief, but also in lifestyle.
"Disciple. A learner or pupil who accepts the teachings of Christ, not only in belief, but also in lifestyle." J. Oswald Sanders
Given that environment, things will happen that will be experienced by students:
There is much benefit to living on Camp Peniel property. There are close to 400 acres of land to hike and explore, providing much opportunity to be away from distractions and seek quiet from the busyness of the world. For 9 months, students of the program will be challenged by godly men and women from near and far while being a resident in camp lodging. Every week will be a new opportunity to display the things learned in the classroom whether plugged into a local ministry or within Camp's own ministries like weekend retreats. All this happens within the boundaries of community with people that come as close as family.
Our next program runs from September 2, 2015 - May 5, 2016. A major part of the Discipleship Program are classes and individual work that corresponds with each class. Each participant is required to attend class Tuesday thru Thursday. Each week of class will be topical teaching based on Scriptures with the expectation of completing home work and practical application. The rest of the week will be time spent with God and the “camp family,” serving in local ministries or with work projects around camp.
Each student will have the opportunity to work and earn money in return for their service on weekend retreats. With the program set up in such a way, young adults don’t only serve as students throughout the week, but serve as staff members on the weekends providing a way to pay for the program or possibly earn some extra cash.
We want to make Peniel Discipleship something that is an easily attainable reality for all people. With the opportunity to work on the weekends and relationships within our community, earning funds is not an impossible task while living at camp. However, financial responsibility is an aspect of discipleship. Students will be responsible to raise or earn a tuition of $3400. This will provide 9 months of living within camp's gates, (teachers, travel expenses for camp related activities, books, food and housing.)
Please have a plan of how you will make payments. If a student is unable to make a payment, he/she will be asked to leave until able to make a payment or potentially until the next program start date.
